Experience

I have nineteen years of experience: six years in the classroom and thirteen years tutoring. I have taught a range of subjects in the classroom, including ESL, ESL History, English and French. I also have experience in one-on-one home instruction, both as a private tutor and as a public school employee. For thirteen years, I have been self-employed, tutoring a variety of students of all ages, needs and backgrounds, including disaffected students seeking enriched or alternative instruction. I take pride in reaching students who frequently find subjects tedious or difficult, or both. Because of my own arduous experience in school, I strive to be the kind of teacher I never had, alive to the possibility in every student, aware that ability is often blunted by personal turmoil. My method is to connect ideas to the students' own lives, their own dreams, to locate hidden relevance. Students need personally applicable instruction, based on authentic situations, which can be put to immediate, practical use. This is painstaking, handcrafted education: I strive to make my moments with students meaningful and intensely memorable, a resource for living, making it clear that errors are not to be feared, that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. Together, we create a relaxed atmosphere in which all feel comfortable, able to challenge ourselves without embarrassment. Humour, high-energy and imagination, blending elements of visual and theatrical arts, are essential because teaching and learning, at its best, should never be dull.

I love Nature, spending as much time as possible outside. Since moving to the Bay Area, I have found hummingbirds and pelicans to be a revelation. Give me six hours with a good book in a quiet room. I adore complexity and ideas, peeling away the layers of time to find, at the root, possible answers to "Why?" and "How?"
