Rachel M.
Private tutor in Oakland, CA
Education
I completed my BA in English at Sonoma State University. I then went on to receive a certification in teaching English as a second language from the Trinity College accredited Oxford TEFL Language school in Barcelona, Spain.
Experience
Since moving to the Bay Area 5 years ago, I have worked as a tutor with students of all ages both through a local company and independently. I can assist with school assignments and also create lesson plans as needed. After graduating from Sonoma State University with a BA in English, I tutored students in Barcelona who were preparing to take English language examinations. I also have experience as a teacher's aide in elementary school classrooms. When I took the SAT in preparation for entering college, I received scores of Critical Reasoning: 610, Writing:660. My education since this time has only improved my skill and knowledge in these areas.

Hobbies
I get most excited when I can help a student understand a concept that was previously difficult for them, such as the functions and nuances of language and literature. I could not be more engaged than when discussing metaphors, analogies, allegory, vocabulary, syntax, semantics, and even grammar! Throughout the last decade of my experience, I've noticed that that this passion can be the essential key to a student's "getting it". At the same time, I approach my interaction with students as a practical opportunity to instill in them a sense of how to "play the game" of school with the greater goal of enhancing their critical thinking. In my free time, I can be found enjoying nature, dancing, cooking, listening to music, and reading novels.
