Gwen S.
Private tutor in Oakland, CA
Education
I have a Bachelor's of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, class of 2014; I am working towards a Master's of Fine Arts (Fiction/Prose) at Mills College, class of 2017.
Experience
In my time as an independent tutor, I have worked closely with a family of 3 children ranging from ages 7 to 13, cultivating stronger reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, and juggling 3 sets of coursework to apply homework assistance with one-on-one study. My most recent experience was training and instruction based, as well. I worked in nonprofit fundraising as lead field manager, leading the training of core staff and development of new employees, relating crucial fundraising and public outreach skills through formal instruction and in-field example. I also have experience working in a girls’ group home setting, applying Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training to support and manage adolescent girls with behavioral, emotional, and mental health needs. My strengths lie in essay writing and test taking, especially in humanities such as English and Social Studies; I received a 32 composite on my ACT, with a score of 36 in the English and Writing areas. I love working closely with my pupils and employ a strong attention to detail in figuring out individualized learning styles.
