Education

In 2013, I graduated with honors from the UC Berkeley Department of History. While my thesis work was focused on Latin American history, the degree required me to explore a wide variety of historical topics. The histories of Latin America and the United States are deeply intertwined, and thus my degree required a strong understanding of US history. I received a 5 on the AP US History exam, and would love to work with students on this topic I find so fascinating.

Experience

As a long time educator, tutor, community organizer and program manager, it has become clear to me that every student learns differently, and has different needs. It is an absolute thrill for me to help a student discover what they need to learn successfully and grow academically, and to help them develop the skills necessary to meet those needs. As a tutor, I believe in approaching each and every student from a holistic, student-centered place. To me, teaching is a process of connecting with a student, learning who they are, gaining their trust and then, from this place of trust, using your own knowledge and experience to guide them towards their learning goals. I have consistently put these beliefs into action in my work as tutor whether my students were in grades K-12 or working toward a college degree. As a Lindamood-Bell Clinician, I have worked with students in grades K-12 who struggle academically due to learning disabilities. I mostly focused on reading and writing, but did have a small group of students with which I would review middle and high school math concepts. Working with Nurturing Wisdom, my work was primarily focused on SAT and ACT test prep, as well as some high school math. Recently, while working with Edventure More, I've taken on responsibilities as an in-class science presenter, as well as a Summer Camp Director. Currently, I am also working with the Aspire Education Project, and Oakland based tutoring non profit. There, my work focuses on test prep as well as history, english and math up to AP Calculus. I also have a good deal of experience working with college aged students to improve their academic skills. While studying at UC Berkeley, I volunteered for a variety of on campus writing clinics, and peer-to-peer support groups. I also gained a great deal of experience providing peer-to-peer academic and social support while living and working in a student housing cooperative. Before switching to the history department at UC Berkeley, I was focused on getting a degree in English. Academic reading and writing has always been one of my strongest subjects, and it is something I am passionate about helping students improve. As a tutor, the majority of my professional experience has been in reading and writing. This was the primary focus of my work at Lindamood Bell, and my volunteer tutoring work as a college student. I have worked with students in grade K-12, as well as students in college on improving their ability to read with focus and attention, retain information that they have read, and to use this information to write interesting, clear and informative essays. Study skills improvement is something I gained significant experience in while working at Lindamood Bell. This is also something that I have struggled with personally as a student, and in overcoming these obstacles myself, I feel I have found the skills needed to help others do the same. School work can be overwhelming and often discouraging to students who struggle with organization and study skills. Therefore, when tutoring this subject, it is my goal to help my student stay calm and collected when approaching large amounts of work, and to give them tools to break this work down into accessible chunks. In our first session, I would want to have them outline their current study process and organizing systems. I’d have them describe things like when and where they study, whether they do other things while studying, and try to explore other factors that may be holding them back. I’d provide them with some suggestions for how they might start altering their current systems, and help them start building a personalized study plan. I’d also want to take a look at their current assignments and try scheduling them into our newly developed study system. All of my students, no matter the age, will be challenged with weekly assignments that not only flex their academic skills, but also push them to think creatively and find ways to really enjoy the work they are doing. Academic progress comes best when a student is able to connect with their work. I feel that my lessons and tutoring style pushes students to make these important connections, and allows them to grow in exciting ways.

Hobbies

When not working with students, I love to build and make things. I get such a thrill out of taking things apart, and changing the way they work. I love to play with the ways in which art and technology can come together to make beautiful, amazing things. I am avid supporter and contributor to the Open Source Movement, and really enjoy experimenting with different open source technologies. I don’t spend all my time on my computer though. I also love running, hiking and camping and have explored many of California’s amazing national parks.
